2 types of MIDI lead are produced under the CustomleadZ brand name as shown below and which are as follows. Type # 1 are 'dedicated' MIDI leads and type # 2 are 'all pins connected' MIDI leads. Both types of lead are equally suitable for MIDI use with little or no discernable difference in quality. The difference between the lead types is mainly of concern when the lead is likely to be used for transmitting other signals or power alongside (or instead of) the MIDI data. Should the lead be required for other uses beside MIDI such as for example, supplying phantom power or audio use etc. then it is important that you are aware of the difference between the 2 types to prevent incorrect ordering. Whilst both types of lead are terminated with the standard MIDI 5 pin Din connector, the 'dedicated' MIDI lead is wired in accordance to the correct MIDI standard with only 3 pins of the 5 pin DIN being connected and so uses a dense braided screened 1 x twisted pair cable. In comparison, the 'all pins connected' MIDI lead is still wired in accordance to the correct MIDI standard but has also the 2 remaining pins of the 5 pin DIN connected and is made using a dense braided screen 2 x twisted pair cable, thus making it possible to send other signals or power alongside the MIDI signals down the 2 extra cable cores.
